Making Improvements In The Garden

September 3, 2010 by johnmce

Many people lust after outdoor spaces, so if you have the luxury of a garden you should be making the most of it. Especially in the warm, summer months, it's an enjoyable way to spend time at home. There are many ways of improving a garden, and it can be hard to know where to start, especially if you have a blank canvas.

The easiest way of sprucing up a garden is by planting a few flowers, bushes, herbs or even trees. Whilst it might be simple to do, new plants do take some time to take root and blossom, and some people have trouble growing in their garden because of the type of soil available. Soil high in sand or clay may have a pH or acidity which means plants don't take well to the soil, or it may be full of wild weeds.

Landscaping can also improve a garden, particularly if there are ditches or uneven surfaces. Landscaping can be hard work, but timber decking is an easy way of evening out those surfaces. Decking is perfect for a variety of garden uses, such as barbecues, sun bathing, working or cleaning. Decking is relatively easy to assemble and install, and requires a minimal amount of maintenance. The decking can be tailor made to fit inside the dimensions of your garden, and there are several different types and shade of wood available.

Garden decking can look after itself in the summer months, but in the winter time when the weather is wet and windy, it can become slippery and dangerous. This is why decking needs to be cleaned regularly, although installing decking with grooves is a good way of ensuring you can always get a grip.

There are many ways that railway sleepers can be used in the garden, for levelling uneven surfaces, creating raised flower or plant beds and even for constructing a shed. Railway sleepers can be used in many ways, and are a budding garden designer's dream.

Another way to improve a garden is to encourage the local wildlife into it, perhaps by providing bird feeders, bird baths, or nut boxes for squirrels. As you spend time in the garden soaking up the sunshine and appreciating all the flowers, you could also be being entertained by local wildlife. Different sizes and types of bird feeder attract different birds, so you can prevent your garden from becoming infested with pigeons by encouraging tits and jays into it.
